The most powerful phrase you can use in coaching is “I don’t know, let’s explore it together. Sharing information is teaching. Sharing benchmarks is consulting. Sharing models and methodologies is training. Sharing guidance is mentoring. Sharing personal stories is friendship.

All leaders in the coaching world do have traits they have mastered over the years. Here are some questions you should be asking yourself.

What is your winning aspiration? Choosing the word WINNING, you rule out mediocrity as an option. Winning means to know what game your playing and with whom. Think about what inpact do you want to have in and on the business world.

Where will you choose to play? Choose a sector, geography, product, channel or customer. This allows you to focus your resources.

How will you win? What’s the defendable difference that will open up the gap between you and others.

What Capabilities must you put in place? It’s not just knowing what you need to do, but how will it become and stay a strength.

Slow your rush to unleashing your inner “Advice Monster.” Asking questions first helps them think through the problem themselves and makes sure your advice is applicable or even wanted!

Good coaches don’t pile on 100 questions at a time. Ask one question and then stop yourself. Listen. Coaches listen genuinely which means staying curious and giving space (i.e. silence sometimes) for people to process and answer. Your role is to help people think more deeply not give them the answers.

Your 1st question should always be ” What’s on your mind”? It is a straightforward, more open inquiry that lets the respondent express what is most important to them. Launches the conversation and then you can orient towards one of the 3Ps, People, Project, or Patterns.

Without a good question, a good answer has no place to go. People want to be lead. Instead of giving them the answer to a question on how to do something, guide them to find the answer from the material provided. Ask them questions to see if they are reading the material or just the easy way out by asking for the answer. Ask people questions more often rather than telling them what to do.

Coaching should not be a once-in-a-while but a daily, informal activity. This coaching aims to help the individual trying to solve the problem rather than merely focusing on the problem itself. Let people speak. Resist the need to help out by speaking.

The AWE Question: And what else? Get below the surface. Uncover & create possibilities for something deeper. Once more, you pass the ball to the other while resisting the need to speak. So it’s not that you won’t ever be able to give advice or respond to questions, but you should do it at the right moment and in the proper way to avoid giving replies that are ineffectual or, in some cases, less insightful than the question itself.

Have a FOCUS question. What’s the real challenge here for you? Look for foundational needs: Affection, Creation, Recreation, Freedom, Identity, Understanding, Participation, Protection, Subsistence. It’s essential to keep your attention on the person you’re speaking to and to steer clear of abstractions and generalisations.

Next you should have The Foundation Question: What do you want? This enables people to express themselves more clearly, which enhances interaction and decision-making. Avoid playing the Rescuer (which leads to the vicious cycles above). Direct them to try to solve it on their own first: “What are your first thoughts?” Another way to say this “What would support from me look like?”

We all need help and coaches are the ticket. Don’t think for a minute you can’t be a coach. It takes time and training. You can do it. I believe in you.

Our day-to-day conversation is incomplete and monotonous without follow-up questions. Follow-up questions help us in getting deep insights into the topic we are discussing. But sometimes, it’s very difficult to know what follow-up questions we should ask.

The key to understanding what a prospect wants and needs lies in the follow-up question.

What are the Benefits of asking Follow Up Questions? Follow up questions can help you learn more about your prospects and identify any potential concerns they may have. By asking follow up questions, you can also establish a strong relationship with your prospect and build trust.

Great questioning is a skill every successful marketer has mastered, and the follow-up is a critical part of that questioning process.

Questions That Will Help You Target Your Customers. What are your main reasons for wanting or needing the product or service? What benefits are you looking to get out of this product or service? What’s the biggest opportunity you see here?

The foremost benefit of follow-up questions is that they help in continuing the talk between two people. Help in getting clarity about the mindset of the other person. Questions show to the other person that we are genuinely interested in their feelings and experiences.

Use these tactics for asking great follow-up questions during your next conversation.

Plan Questions Ahead of Time. What are they looking for? How much money are they looking to earn? Do they have a BUDGET? Do they have long term goals?

Master Active Listening -To ask effective follow-up questions, you must pay very close attention to the response the prospect or customer gives to initial questions. You should pay attention not only to the words spoken by prospects, but their tone as well. Make them feel comfortable talking with you. Never pressure them.

Make Questions Open-Ended. Open-ended questions are designed to encourage full, meaningful answers using the subject’s own knowledge and/or feelings.

Probe, But Don’t Interrogate

Having a list of prepared questions can help you be confident going into a prospect call, but sticking to the list too closely can make the conversation feel scripted and unnatural (even like an interrogation). Sometimes you must go with the flow. Make it fun and exciting.

Acquire as much information about the issues your prospect wants addressed.

If you’re just starting out, here are a list of follow-up questions that can be asked after an initial question: How did you feel about that? Why does this matter to you? Are you ready to get started now? Can I guide you through this process?

What do you mean by that? How so?

Use these to clarify their answer. Prospects like this because you show sincere interest. You show that you want to learn more. Why is that important? You tap into their perceptions about relevance and priority. To me this is the biggest question of all-Is there anything else?

Finally, this is the catch all question. Once you’re finished with the initial conversation, ask if they have any other pressing issues that you didn’t discuss that could impact their decision. You never know when something out of left field can surprise you because you failed to ask this question.

I have to look back on a regular basis to see where my thinking has gotten me into the wrong mindset. Then change it. Going from negative to positive.

Look at all the great business men and women. They all had setbacks. They kept going, pushing past the obstacles to reach the goal they set for themselves. Each of these gaints took action. Write your goals and dreams down, then mark them off when you accomplish them.

I believe that perhaps the most important – and an often ignored – thing is simply taking action. As Nike says” JUST DO IT”.

Talking to people on the phone, getting to know them. Making that video for your blog, following up with people to see where they are and where they need to be. What are your daily money actions? Get a mentor who will push you daily, weekly, monthly, yearly pointing you to the finish line. Are you able to take action and get things done? Whether you’re in a leadership role at work or you’re just trying to get through your daily to-do list, having strong action-oriented skills can make a big difference.

Being proactive means taking the initiative to start something without being asked. Do you do the dishes, vaccum, dust, cook without being asked? Help other with jobs that need to get done?

It’s the same in business. It’s your life and mine. We MUST take charge and make things happen if we want something better to happen. Taking initiative is important because it shows that you are motivated and interested in getting things done.

Being decisive is an important skill because it allows you to make decisions quickly and efficiently. When you are decisive, you are able to focus on the most important tasks and get them done.
